Our brand name Asariyo (spelled Casariyo in Somali) tea came from the colloquial Somali phrase which signifies “mid-afternoon tea drinking”.
Tea is an important social beverage to Somali people. It is called shaah in the Somali language. Tea was first introduced to Somalis through ancient trade with the Arabs and Indians.Somalis enjoy drinking aromatic spiced tea at anytime of the day but especially at breakfast, most certainlyin the late afternoon (called Asariyo) and during supper. It is customary that any guest to a Somali household to be offered the spiced tea known as Shaah Hawaash or Hayle without even asking for it. The aromatic tea is spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and sometimes dry ginger. Usually it is served milky and sweet. In the Somali culture spiced tea with full of aroma is always preferred over coffee.
